The next Torah study will be May 20, 2006

Join us Saturday, May 20 for our next Torah study.  We will be completing the Book of Leviticus with a double portion of the two short parshas, B'har and B'hukkotai.  Last year we studied Behar, especially the part about the Jubilee year of rest  with its forgiveness of debt, release from slavery, and extra faith required in HaShem to feed the people for 2 consecutive years without tilling the land.  This week we will focus on the final group of commandments given in B'hukkotai for the Israelites to follow to be the Holy people HaShem wants us to be.  Included are some stern warnings and possible punishments if we don't follow the rules.  How seriously do we take the Biblical Laws?  Do we get to chose which laws we obey?  How successful will a society be if everyone picks the rules they want to do?  How good of a psychologist/parent was Hashem; did He/She really think we could follow directions?  Did He assume as He dictated to Moses that we would be less than perfect practitioners of the Holiness Code set forth in Leviticus?  How does this apply to our modern concepts of government, religion, and  personal ethics?  How is this parsha relevant to us today despite its very outdated, ancient list of do's and don'ts?

Our discussions are always lively.  No prior knowledge nor experience is necessary.  everyone is welcome.  Meet in the library 20 minutes after services, after your Oneg nosh.  Bring your coffee and sweets.

Read the two portions in advance!
