Spring Message
This message is important
for all Club members and for men in our congregation who are considering
becoming members in our Men's Club. It is also a "mini-appeal"
for support and a reminder to current members to maintain their support.
My High Holiday message is not one of appealing to our guilt but is
one of restating the Mission of our Club and inspiring the vitality
needed to continue our good works. All of us must guard against Apathy.
Personal Apathy quickly turns into Collective Apathy. Taking Responsibility
is the ANTIDOTE to Apathy, and Volunteerism is the vehicle used to transport
responsibility. Finally, Satisfaction is the end result of our actions.
The Men's Club functions much along those lines but needs as much as
total congregational participation as possible to produce the best benefits.
Your Men's Club sponsors the B.S.K.I. Web Site, scholarship programs,
cultural, fellowship and educational events for all members and guests
of B.S.K.I. as well as providing other basic services. Fund raisers
are part of the annual activities as well, and we thankfully acknowledge
those persons who have participated in our Entertainment and Yom Hashoa
Memorial Candle Projects. These and other projects will be part of our
future for the coming year. In the meantime, largely due, perhaps, to
the mean-spirited events of this past year, warrants me to remind all
to take Personal Responsibility to pay outstanding dues from 2002, respond
with your 2003 dues, and honor other outstanding obligations. A donation
to the Club honoring Ann and Harold Goldwasser, Immediate Past-President,
on their service would be much appreciated. Harold's email address is Haauh2o@aol.com. Thank you for
your courtesy and understanding. L'shana Tovu one and all.
We've pushed ahead with daylight savings time and spring has sprung!
Activities have increased for the congregation in general. Elsewhere
in this bulletin is an article concerning our reestablishment of an
award for the Person-of-the-Year for BSKI. Sunday evening,
May l9th, is a day for all members to stand up and cheer for Paula Hamvas
and all the contributions she has made to our congregation. In March,
as part of our National Mens Club Federation Shabbat, and in cooperation
with our recently formed Israel Information Education Committee and
the St. Louis JCRC, we invited Vice-Counsel David Roet as our guest
for a Shabbat Lunch and Learn. All members of the Club involved in the
morning Shabbat Services appreciated your response and comments, as
well as the participation by the congregational Torah Readers
encouraged by Cantor Portner. We heartily endorse his (and their) efforts.
Special
thanks go to Rabbi Miller for his assistance and for the Haftorah;
Lou Rafsky for the early service, and Harold Goldwasser as Chief Gabbai.
Upcoming
activities for Mitzvah Day include clean- up support for Jim Rothberg
of the Congregational Campus and supporting a need for delivery of
Rower
Pots as well as other individual favorite projects. One such project,
hosted by long- time club member, Shimon Ben-Poorat, assisting in local
tree planting, needs to be recognized and incorporated into our annual
schedule of events and given more publicity as a family event.
Last year part of my family participated in a wonderful experience with
other St. Louis Jewish Congregations and Hillel. Your Mens Club
congratulates Shimon!
December 2001
The B.S.K.I. Men's Club is proud to announce that Corine Hamvas
will speak at an open congregational program, Sunday morning,
January 13, in the sanctuary. Corine, daughter of
Aaron and Paula Hamvas, will describe and provide a slide
presentation of her experiences as a volunteer-cum-peace corps in
Latin America and Israel this past summer. We encourage all
parents and children to attend this program together to better
understand volunteerism and the mechanisms available to our
congregation for both college and high school youth. All members of
the congregation will benefit from sharing Corine's first-hand
encounters with another culture, and we urge you to put this on
your calendars.
The Men's Club cooperative art, modeling and design project with
the Congregational Sunday School for a proposed new SUKKA gets
underway in January. Provisions for those members whose children
do not attend Sunday School (Schecter and CAJE RRR) will be made
directly through Don Pearline, Chairman. Please contact Don
through the office if your child/grandchild falls into the later
categories. Children in grades 3 and under will be constructing
Sukka decorations to be attached to the walls and ceiling, and may
be used with our current Sukka during the proposed construction
period. Grades four and above will be given the "rules" during
January, as approved by Rabbi Miller. The Men's club will be
awarding prizes in several age-group categories. The Men's club announces
that Don Pearline has been elected to fill
the office of Co-secretary for the remainder of the term vacated by
Richard Gavatin when Richard accepted Vice-President last month.
Don serves with Rick Kodner as CO-secretaryReregistration is upon us
once again! Click here!
We need all the participation possible to continue to support our congregational
activities.

replacement as CO-Secretary, a
duty he had been sharing with Rick Kodner. If any member is
interested in learning about the workings of the Internet and our
BSKI web site, please call me at my office, 636-335-7211, home,

is scheduled for a D'var Torah on this topic, Saturday, January 12.
Our BSKI Men's Club has revived the Person of the Year Award.
Mark your calendars for May 19! Our selection for this revival
year is Paula
Hamvas, who
wonderfully encompasses many duties and responsibilities for our congregation. An announcement in the January
bulletin will detail our involvement with the Federation of Jewish
Men's
Clubs and the Yom Hashoa memorial candle project. The money collected
from this project is initially slated for Federation use in support
Israeli summer experiences for children of conservative congregations.
Last year two of our children benefited by awards from both the federation
and your BSKI Men' Club. Please support our efforts generously.Have
the happiest of time this Hanukah. Shalom!Jerry

October
Message: October 2001 BSKI Men's Club News In behalf of all BSKI
Men's
Clubbers, we extend our wish for a Happy and Healthy New Year to all
members. Our congregation has a wonderful support scheme that enables
the whole High Holidays' process to appear seamless. The Men's' Club,
along with all the groups comprising BSKI, performs functions that
translates
to mitzvots. Ushering is one of those tasks and, this year was especially
sensitive. Those members participating in "keeping the aisles
moving"
were Harvey, Sandy and Jeff Melnick, Milton Movitz, Rick and Gary Kodner,
Richard Gavatin, Jerry Towbin, Dennis Altman, Marvin Marcus, and Sandy
Weinberg. A special Toda Raba to Jeff Melnick who suggested that we
all stand as a single congregation for Yitzkor, instead of departing
the sanctuary, to honor those lost on September 11. Traditions are
hard and difficult to change but circumstances and situations evolve
society
which require adjustments to tradition. I know that I will encourage
my children, grandchildren and other family and friends to stay in
the
sanctuary during Yitzkor from this year onward. I so encourage all
my fellow members and congregation. Fall is the season of SUKKA and
our
SUKKA Master, Don Pearline wrote about it here! Thanks
to all you that participate, and especially the response. A record
set-up
(if we really kept records) of about 45 minutes took place under member
Larry Koenig's generous donation and talent.Fall is also the season
for our ENTERTAINMENT BOOK sale. Perfect for Gifts for yourself and
others. Cost is $20 each.
Contact the office or call me at 636-225-3194 and a Men's' Club representative
will arrange or deliver your ENTERTAINMENT BOOK. We will be selling
these items through the second week of November. Take advantage of these
gifts for Hanukah.Announcements of specific activities for BSKI Men's
Club during the next three months will be made later in October. A date
is yet to be scheduled for a presentation by Corrine Hamvas regarding
her experiences in Central America and Israel this past summer.

Sukka:
TODA
RABA FOR SUKKA!Sunday, September 30, 2001, the Men's Club Sukkah Construction
Company again set up the BSKI Congregational Sukkah in the front entry
court. A New World Record was established in setting up the walls of the
Sukkah in 45 minutes. The branch and leaf roofing had been put in place
earlier. Special recognition goes to Larry Koenig, a regular member of
the Construction Company, who provided tools and materials. Those tools
and materials re-enforced the sukkah elements and made possible improvements
and simplifications in methods that significantly speeded up the process.
Construction in years past took two to three hours. The re-enforcement
of wall sections will give BSKI at least another year of use while plans
and designs for a new Sukkah are developed.A major announcement will be
made in December for the benefit of the congregation in the development
of a new SUKKA, tentatively scheduled for 2002 or 2003. The Men's Club
thanks Paula Hamvas for assisting with the pre-construction breakfast,
and to BSKI custodial staffers George Lloyd and Gerald Lynch for their
invaluable help.Members of the Sukkah Construction Company are: Mike Anderson,
Jonathan Cannon, Robert Ciralsky, Gary Kodner, Larry Koenig, Marvin Marcus,
Donald Pearline, Lou Rafsky, Jerry Raskin, and Jim Rothberg. Spring
Message:A
GIANT TODA RABA! to all members who participated in the Mens Club
Shabbat. Special thanks go to Marvin Marcus, DVAR Torah. Paul Korklan,
haftorah, and to our Gabbis and Organizers, Lou Rafsky and Don Pearline.
It was a joy for all!Our membership renewal campaign is well underway.
Please send in your dues and comments to the office as soon as possible. The
Federation of Jewish Mens Club is having their bi-annual conference
this year in Toronto, July 11 -15. If any member wants to spend sometime
learning about leadership initiatives within organizations and synagogues,
please contact me via email at NIKSAR@aoLcom.
See you Shabbat.
