A Summer Message from the VP of Education

Minutes from the Adult Education Meeting July 19:

NEXT MEETING, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 31, 7:30PM, WHITE ROOM

Marvin thanked Committee members for making last year a highly successful one and expressed his appreciation to those who had chaired or co-chaired programs. He envisioned this next year as one of building on our successes, with program improvement and expansion. This depends on more people joining the Committee and coming forth to lead and/or help out. Marvin also spoke about the importance of the Committee enlisting the help of other shul committees and working together with them in co-sponsoring events; collaborating with community organizations and agencies; addressing the diverse needs and interests of congregants.

CURRENT PROGRAMS
Rabbi Miller reported on his various classes. He said that the Sunday evening Bible Study Havurah would resume meeting in the fall and was looking for a few new members. His Rashi, Issues in Judaism, and Shabbat afternoon Talmud classes would continue as in the past, with a varied summer schedule, and invited everyone to attend. Those in attendance who were already participating in one or more of the above gave testimony as to their increased knowledge and spiritual consciousness. The Rabbi mentioned that Rabbi Moshe Edelman would be coming to BSKI the weekend of October 21-23 to speak on Friday night, Shabbat morning, and to members of the BSKi Board on Sunday. He requested the help of Marvin and other members of the Committee for that weekend when plans become more specific.

TORAH STUDY GROUP
Helene Frankel reported that she would schedule the next session for Saturday, August 13. There is a solid core of about 14 people who attend regularly.

BOOK CLUB
Marvin said that he would leave it up to Ralph to decide whether or not he (Ralph) wanted to continue leading the Book Club. If not, it's hoped that someone else will step forward.

FRIDAY NIGHT DINNER-SEMINARS
A number of topics were suggested for this coming year's Friday night dinner-seminars. The following was finally agreed to:

Sunday morning, January 29.
Topic not yet decided. Dr. Sam Goldman, Professor Southern Illinois University (ret.),Presenter. Marvin Beckerman, Chair.

Other topics discussed and that will be re-visited for future program consideration included Kosher Environmental Issues, a panel of professional women congregants speaking on their careers, and Rosh Hodesh.

OTHER PROGRAM IDEAS
Marvin and Rabbi Miller also mentioned that Rabbi David Golinkin, President and Professor of Jewish Law at the Schechter Institute of Jewish Studies in Jerusalem, is interested in speaking at BSKI this coming year. Rabbi Golinkin's credentials are impressive and his list of lecture topics are many and varied. Rabbi Miller and Marvin will explore the possibility of getting Rabbi Golinkin here and they will report back.

CAJE'S ADULT JEWISH EDUCATION COUNCIL
Al Weltman reported that he had attended a meeting of the Adult Jewish Education Council on May 26 and that the main agenda item was to put this coming year's course catalog together. Al was asked to continue to represent us on the Council and to make sure that BSKI's offerings were included in the catalog.
