The underlying premises and goals of the Vav class are formulated in the context of the overall curriculum framework of the Shaare Shalom Hebrew School. During the Vav class we aim to achieve the following:
READING
A. To strengthen reading skills in accuracy, pronunciation and enunciation through reading drills in:
1. The New Siddur Program for Hebrew & Heritage, Book 3
2. Siddur Sim Shalom (See Prayer/Siddur Division.)
LANGUAGE
A. To study the vocabulary of The New Siddur Program for Hebrew & Heritage, Book 3 enabling a child to:
1. Translate from Hebrew to English and English to Hebrew all the vocabulary words/phrases
2. Answer questions in Hebrew, orally and on paper, utilizing the vocabulary from these lessons
PRAYER/SIDDUR
A. To review and strengthen reading accuracy in:
1. Mincha and Maariv (Ashrei, Amidah, Aleinu, Barchu, Three Paragraphs of Shema)
2. Shabbat/Yom Tov Kiddush
3. The Full Birkat Hamazon
4. Shabbat Morning Torah Service
5. Hatikva
B. To understand the general idea of the above prayers/services enabling a child to answer questions in English
C. To master all vocabulary and concepts from the unit on Havdalah
CHUMASH/TANACH
A. To study the Parsha of Yitro enabling a child to:
1. Answer questions in English based on the English translation given in the Chumash
2. Associate Hebrew phrases with the English translation given in the Chumash
3. Emphasize the connection between the study of Yitro and the Festival of Shavuot
HOLIDAYS
A. Understand the general background and meaning of specific holiday prayers/songs and vocabulary as indicated in the Melton Curriculum for the fall holidays and Pesach
B. To acknowledge the coming of other holidays briefly
C. To gain an understanding of the Jewish calendar and be able to:
1. Determine the Sidrah and Haftarah portion of each week.
2. Determine the date when each new month is to be blessed.
3. Determine the Hebrew date of each calendar day.
4. Determine the Hebrew and English date of each special day mentioned on the calendar.
5. Create a calendar based on the Jewish months.
D. Jewish music and Hebrew songs of Israel
E. Celebrate a full Shabbat in an overnight Shabbaton experience
