The underlying premises and goals of the Hey class are formulated in the context of the overall curriculum framework of the Shaare Shalom Hebrew School. During the Hey class we aim to achieve the following:
READING
A. To strengthen reading skills in accuracy, pronunciation and enunciation through reading drills in the assigned textbooks.
LANGUAGE
A. To master the vocabulary of The New Siddur Program for Hebrew and Heritage Book 2
1. Translate from Hebrew to English and English to Hebrew the selected vocabulary.
2. Master selected vocabulary related to specific prayers.
PRAYER/SIDDUR
A. To master vocabulary and concepts from Heneni Book 2
B. To review and strengthen reading accuracy in:
1. Shabbat/Yom Tov Kiddush
2. Shema and V'ahavta
3. Ashrei
4. Aleinu
5. Prayer for Israel
6. Hatikva
C. To study the Birkat Hamazon as a total entity and understand the major concepts about and within it.
Note: Students should have the skills to recite the Birkat Hamazon at the end of this unit.

CHUMASH/TANACH

1. Answer questions in English based on the explanations in the text
2. Relate passages in the text to everyday living
HOLIDAYS
A. Understand the general background and meaning of specific holiday prayers/songs and vocabulary for the fall holidays and Pesach.
B. To acknowledge the coming of other holidays briefly
C. Jewish music and Hebrew songs of Israel
D. Celebrate a full Shabbat in an overnight Shabbaton experience
