GIMMEL (3rd Grade)

The underlying premises and goals of the Gimmel class are formulated in the context of the overall curriculum framework of the Jewish Community Hebrew School.  During the Gimmel class we aim to achieve the following:

READING
A.         To master all the letters and vowels, enabling a student to read accurately but slowly from the Haggadah by Pesach

            B.         The ability to recite the Aleph-Bet in order, and recognize the individual letters and vowels by name

            C.        The ability to correctly pronounce unfamiliar Hebrew words

WRITING
A.      To master all the Hebrew letters and vowels enabling a child to:
         1.     Copy the printed word into cursive writing.

         2.     Read any work that has been cursively written.

LANGUAGE
To master vocabulary from Journeys: A Hebrew Primer and various other packets

PRAYER/SIDDUR
A.      To read accurately from the Siddur:
         1.     Modeh Ani
         2.     Shema & V'ahavta
         3.     Ein Ke-Loheinu
         4.     MiChamocha
         5.     Shabbat Kiddush
         6.     Shalom Alechem
         7.     Hatikva
         8.     Selections from Birkat Hamazon
                 a.    Shir Ha'malot
                 b.    First B’racha
         9.     Adon Olam

B.      To read the following blessings:
                     1.     Wine
                     2.     Candles (Shabbat, Yom Tov and Chanukah)
                     3.     Challah
                     4.     Cookies, cakes
                     5.     Fruit of tree
                     6.     Vegetable
                     7.     Drinks
                     8.     Hand-washing
                     9.     Shecheyanu

C.     To master all vocabulary and concepts from Heneni Book 1

D.     Receive and use a personal Siddur
          
            E.     To introduce and emphasize the importance of prayer in our lives

 

HOLIDAYS
A.      Understand the general background and meaning of specific holiday prayers/songs and vocabulary

B.      To briefly acknowledge the coming of the Jewish holidays

C.     Jewish music and Hebrew songs of Israel

D.     Celebrate a full Shabbat in an overnight Shabbaton experience.

CALENDAR
            A.      To understand that each Hebrew letter represents a number

B.      The ability to count 1 - 30

C.     The ability to recite the days of the week

D.     To be familiar with the names of the Hebrew months
