The underlying premises and goals of the DALET class are formulated in the context of the overall curriculum framework of the Shaare Shalom Hebrew School. During the DALET class we aim to achieve the following:
READING
To strengthen reading skills in accuracy, pronunciation, and enunciation through reading drill in
Siddur Sim Shalom
WRITING
To review and practice the proper formation of letters and continue to strive for excellence in cursive writing
LANGUAGE
To master selected vocabulary and goals as outlined in The New Siddur Program for Hebrew and Heritage Book 1
HOLIDAYS
A. Understand the general background and meaning of specific holiday prayers/songs and vocabulary
B. Jewish music and Hebrew songs of Israel
C. Celebrate a full Shabbat in an overnight Shabbaton experience
PRAYER/SIDDUR
A. To review the following prayers previously taught in the Aleph year and maintain the ability to read them accurately:
1. Shabbat Kiddush
2. Ein KeLoheinu
3. Hatikva
4. Shema and V'ahavta
5. Modeh Ani
B. To accurately read the following portions of the home Shabbat Service and be able to discuss key concepts:
1. Blessing over the candles for Shabbat and Yom Tov
2. Shalom Aleichem
3. Friday Night Kiddush
4. Blessing over the hands
5. Birkat Hamazon
a. Shir Ha’malot and First B’racha (review from Aleph)
b. Nodeh L’cha and V’al Ha Chol (Second B’racha)
c. Rachem & Uv’nay (Third Paragraph)
C. To learn to chant selections from the Minchah Service
1. Ashrei
2. Alenu
D. To master vocabulary and concepts from Heneni Book 1
E. To learn to lead a Havdalah Service
