Re:  Lost Boy of Sudan Programs

 

Mr. Mel Deng, Vice President of Greater Kansas City Lostboys Network and one of the Lost Boys of Sudan, will speak at two important events in the St. Louis areaAs a young boy, Mr. Deng fled the violence in southern Sudan with 1000s of other children, wandering for years through the dangerous countryside before reaching a Kenyan refugee camp.  The story of these young refugees has been chronicled in the acclaimed documentary "The Lost Boys of Sudan." He will speak about his personal journey and the current genocide that rages in Darfur.

The situation on the ground in Darfur is rapidly deteriorating. The opposing sides in the conflict now seem headed toward a large-scale military confrontation, bringing Darfur to the edge of a new abyss - perhaps the deepest it has faced. Yesterday, the United Nations Security Council voted 12-0-3 to create a United Nations peacekeeping force in Sudan's Darfur region, despite the Khartoum government's strong opposition.
